THE SOUTH BANK LION - LONDON
Westminster Bridge, Near County Hall, London SE1 - England, UK
The South Bank Lion was originally bright red due to it being placed outside the Red Lion Brewery on the London's South Bank. When The Royal Festival Hall was built, the brewery was demolished but thanks to His Majesty George VI, the lion was saved and re-sited to guard over Waterloo Station.
The lion was again on the move when in 1966 Waterloo Station was enlarged and the statue was renamed The South Bank Lion and placed in its current position. The statue is made from Coade Stone and designed by W F Woodington. It weighs over 13 tons and is 13feet long and 12 feet high.
So although taken with a relatively cheap and low resolution camera (4 megapixel) I think that the moment was just right for an interesting picture. The moral is twofold - firstly always be aware of the lighting and secondly, always carry a camera - you never know when the image just begs to be taken.
